Fleet Manager

They partner with logistics, operations, finance and technology to ensure the fleet delivers value.

  • Monitor fuel consumption, vehicle usage, vendor contracts, tyre management, insurance and registrations.
  • Develop and maintain fleet policies, driver training programmes, safety protocols and accidents/claims processes.
  • Use fleet management systems, telematics/GPS tracking, routing software and analytics to optimise fleet performance.
  • Manage fleet budget, track KPIs like cost per mile, downtime, utilisation and report to senior management.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (vehicle safety/emissions/licensing) and manage insurance/claims workflows.
  • Drive fleet modernization — introduce EVs, technologies, right-size fleet and dispose of assets efficiently.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics, business administration, supply chain or similar preferred.

  • Budgeting and cost control experience—negotiating vendor contracts, analysing cost drivers and managing financials.
  • Excellent organisational/multi-tasking capability—manage many vehicles, schedules, deadlines and maintenance events.
  • Knowledge of vehicle regulations, licensing, safety standards and environmental compliance in your region.

Salary Expectations

Estimated salary ranges (U.S. benchmarks):

  • Entry-level (0-2 years): approx US $45,000-65,000/year.
  • Mid-level (3-7 years): approx US $65,000-90,000/year.
  • Senior level (large fleets or strategic roles): US $90,000-120,000+ per year.

Note: salary varies by geography, industry sector, fleet size, technology use and experience.

Career Path & Outlook

Potential progression includes: Fleet Coordinator → Assistant Fleet Manager → Fleet Manager → Senior Fleet/Operations Manager → Director of Fleet or Mobility Services. Growing demands for efficient fleets, telematics, EVs and mobility solutions mean this role is becoming more strategic.

Why This Role Matters

Fleets represent significant cost centres, risk exposure, and strategic mobility assets in many organisations. A competent Fleet Manager ensures vehicles are available, safe, cost-efficient, and aligned with business goals. As fleets become more technologically advanced (telematics, EVs, mobility services), this role evolves from operational to strategic.
